The incoming Member of Parliament for Embakasi East and former Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) chair Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino has promised to ensure that Higher Education Loans Board increases amounts of disbursements made to varsity students per academic year. Babu who defeated a Mr Mureithi of Jubilee Party to clinch the seat has vowed to protect the rights of university students during his time in Parliament. Through a post in one of his Social media pages, Babu Owino said that he will ensure that all student unions in the country are given the respect they deserve. He added that he will ensure that SONU stabilizes and comes back to its normal operations. Since his exit from students politics, the UoN students organization has never held successful elections. Owino also promised to ensure that he takes a bill to parliament that will make it possible for all the students who have been either expelled or suspended from universities to report back as soon as possible and complete their studies. He said that he will be more than hard on the Vice chancellors who have been mistreating students. The young lad had promised to ensure that no fees increased by universities as had been projected by various institution heads. He on several occasions came out to warn the Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiangi on the impending consequence that could befall institutions of higher learning should they agree to increase the fee. Through his close ally and political strategy Ndege Sirkal, Babu called on to all varsity students with registered companies who are capable of doing business with the county government of Nairobi and Embakasi East constituency to present their profiles for consideration. Before his resignation from campus politics, Babu Owino was also head of all University students in East, Central and Southern Africa. He enjoys a substantial support across major campuses in the country and his name is a household name at the University of Nairobi. He is currently taking Bachelors of Law at the University of Nairobi’s Lower Kabete Campus.
